train trip
its a cold day in melbourne. the clouds are grey, and the wind is crisp. hopefully it will be warmer in the city.
i sit on an old train. seeing it next to one of the newest ones, you can definatly notice the stark difference. im on one of the old tartan patterened seats which im a little cautious of. i found a syringe between one, once.
there is a pleasant smell every now and then. sweet, musky, fresh. something i cant quite put a name to. perhaps its a combination of many smells.
i think it might be a uni girls bright purple highlighter. grape.
the window is open a fraction. through it, i can hear the rush of the world go past. the break smell drifts into the carriage when we stop. harsh against my nose, pushing away the ellusive scent.
i listen to the dialogue of two grey haired men. both laughing jovilly while one talks of how prices have risen, or cars, or wine. country folk, in slacks and tops and jumpers. another man sits behind them, glasses, breifcase, black pants, white shirt, tie. reading the Age. i approve of that.
my carriage is getting full now. two uni students sit opposite me. a couple i guess. one joined the other at a later station. a chaste kiss on the cheek. they talk about not having enough money, both have their arms crossed, seemingly closed.
my mind drifts back to the reading i was supposed to do for my media tute that morning, which i didnt go to. affluence. the rich complaining about not having enough money to buy things, while the poor having enough to buy the basic necesseties.
i begin to question my original assumption of the two uni students. i now think that they are not a couple, but rather newish friends. discussing assignments, clothes. the guy appears slightly gay.
their dialogue is intruiging, and i listen to it, trying not to appear obvious that i am doing so.
the sweet smell comes back to my nose.
i notice the hole in my jeans is getting bigger, and i add a mental note to fix them when i get time. this means that i wont do it.
the train goes under ground, and the uni students get off.
I like going underground in trains...
The last time I went underground on a train was in London.
It's great the way you remember things that happen around you.
