The Theology of Inadequecy - Part Two
You can find part one over
here.
I was reading something the other day and i got a funny thought in my head. Jesus, perfectly God and perfectly human, was too weak to carry His own cross.
did you just hear me right. Jesus was weak. not the weak where you give into temptations, but the weak where you just can't do it on your own.
we are fed lies saying that to be an adult, you have to be completely independent of everyone else. that we do not need any one else. we are fed lies that say if we ask for help we are seen as weak, and weakness is a bad thing.
sometimes, as Christians we are told that it is okay to be weak, but in practice we discover that those were just words.
perhaps it is part of Satan's big plan to deceive us all, to convince us that we do not need other people. we are doing fine on our own and we don't need any ones help.
i suffer from this. i hate relying on people. i hate not having a licence so i can't drive around and have to ask people for lifts. often, i just don't because i don't want to be a burden.
i too have bought into Satan's lies, thinking that weakness is a bad thing. But if weakness is a bad thing, did Jesus do something wrong by being too weak to carry His own cross?
Jesus instructed any one who was to follow Him to pick up their cross and do so. but if Jesus Himself couldn't carry it, how are we supposed to? or perhaps, just perhaps, we were actually created to be in community and relationship with everyone else. and that they are to help us in the journey. and we are to help them.
has anyone tried catching someone who falls off a raised platform by themselves? you know the kind, the one at all those team building camps. by yourself you would struggle. but as a team, with arms linked, even the heaviest person is light. even the heaviest burden is light when you have people to share with.
We were not created to live our lives alone. and we need to begin to break down the stereotypes and preconceptions that we (yes, us Christians) have about the meaning of weakness.
because i know that i am weak, i know that i cant do this on my own. none of us can.
Sam... I don't have words enough to say thanks for writing what you wrote. Love so much! Laura
