am i a calvinist?
my lecture and tute this morning, for sociology, were on religion, and secularisation.
the lecture was VERY boring, and no one was concentrating, mind you, i think the fact that there were 15 of us there (from about 50) is an impressive effort and we should be rewarded...
i was writing a letter instead of the lecture notes.
the tute on the other hand was rather interesting.
we had about the same amount of people in the tute (15) but thats ok. thats a good size for a tute class.
in my entire class there were two girls brought up catholic, but not practising. one hindu, one muslim, me being the residant protestant christian, the tutor also brought up protestant, and the rest of the class were either athiests, or agnostics.
a lovely discussion, not about which religion was better, but just in relation to sociology.
craig, the tutor, mentioned the calvinists (which actually was in our sociology stuff in relation to durkheim), and at the end of the class, he came and got my essay and i asked him what he was brought up as.
methodist was the response. i ticked off in my mind, and then categorised him into a denomination. i then told him i had been brought up a calvinist. he was a little suprised, becuase the picture he had been painting of calvinists wasnt a good one. (well, mainly the fact that there is limited atonemont. that only a limited number of people will get into heaven. this is one of the issues i have with calvinism...)
i told him i wasnt a 100% calvinist, but thats how i was brought up.
in fact, id only really be a 75% calvinist.
john calvin, who had ties with both france and holland, at about the same time that luther was refomationising in germany, was doing the same thing, but in france and holland.
while martin luther was about justification by faith alone, calvin was about the sovreignity of God.
calvin penned the thing, TULIP.
meaning, Total depravity. that all people are sinners.
Unconditional Election. god saves people becuase he wants to, not becuase from their own merit.
Limited atonement. that there are limited places in heaven.
Irristable Grace. that when god wants to save a person, he can, and will.
Perseverence of the Saints. that when you have been saved, you will always be saved.
